Living InSync™ -- How to Maintain Balance in Life

Susan Pilgrim Ph.D.Balance in life is more important than ever before. Gone are the days when our most important identity was our profession. We now understand there's more to life than work, and we realize the value of our roles as partner, parent, sister, uncle, and friend. Work will always be an essential part of life. The other aspects of life are equally essential. All of us -- CEOs and receptionists alike -- seek balance. We desire to be InSync with our selves as well as others. Maintaining what seems to be an elusive balance is possible when you learn to live InSync.

When you live InSync, you have an understanding of your self and others. You have a clear vision of what you want in life. You pursue goals that will help you realize your dreams.

When you live InSync, you readily enhance your performance because you naturally access and optimize your personal power. You use your mental capacity for making creative decisions, increasing your productivity, and taking gentle control of life. You direct your thoughts and behaviors to accomplish your goals. You look for and are open to opportunities. Your emotional, physical, mental, social, and spiritual dimensions continually evolve in harmony. When you live InSync, you create a life of balance and purpose.

Let's look at behaviors that would be considered typical of people living InSync in each of the dimensions.

People spiritually InSync seek to know and fulfill their purpose in life. They celebrate the lessons they learn from their mistakes. They are trustworthy and trusting. They forgive themselves and others. They are ethical and demonstrate integrity. They acknowledge that they're an integral entity in this expansive universe.

People emotionally InSync feel, acknowledge, accept, and appropriately express their emotions. They treat themselves with respect. They set aside time for reflection. Their language is positive. They celebrate their gifts and talents.

People mentally InSync set goals and priorities, making sure the important tasks are accomplished. They maximize the use of their time, energy, and resources. They organize their work so they're more productive. They're creative and make effective decisions. They deal sensibly with conflict and approach challenges with enthusiasm.

People physically InSync give their bodies adequate rest. They set aside time daily to relax. They fuel their bodies with nutritious foods and exercise them regularly. They understand that the care they give their bodies directly affects energy, clarity of thought, and longevity.

People socially InSync give to and receive from others. They positively influence others' lives. They nurture their relationships by openly communicating and consciously cooperating. They treat others with respect. They laugh often and enjoy having fun with others. They maintain a broad support system.

If you want to begin living InSync, attend to each dimension daily -- no matter how busy you are or how short the time might be. Engage in behaviors that enhance each of your dimensions. Most of the InSync behaviors aren't complex. They do, however, require your attention and your intention to change your perspective and your behavior.

Living InSync is far from an elusive ideal. It's a pragmatic way you can choose to live. Don't wait for a near-death experience before you realize life is more than what you do for a living -- before you appreciate what life is all about. When you're feeling out of sync and overwhelmed by responsibilities and expectations, keep your perspective. Ask your self, "In the big scheme of life, how important is this?" You'll know what's best for you to do when you intentionally live InSync.
