Gently Controlling Life by Choosing to Live InSyncŪ

Susan Pilgrim Ph.D.Do you often work into the night, past your children's bedtime? Is there a spiritual void in your life? Do you wish you could commit to an exercise routine?

Finding and maintaining a comfortable balance in life is a universal challenge. As a business executive, you're keenly aware that the success of your business is up to you. You may focus so much time and attention on work that you sacrifice other areas of your life. Your responsibility for finances, products, services, customers, and employees is time-consuming and often overwhelming. So it's likely that you feel out of balance with your self and life.

Balance is about living InSyncŪ with your self and others. It's about envisioning what you want in life and pursuing goals that enable you to be the person you intend to be. When you live InSyncŪ, you gently control life by engaging the Spirit. You naturally access and optimize your personal power. You consciously make decisions, foster creativity, and increase productivity. When you live InSyncŪ, you're creating a life of balance and purpose.

There are five areas of living. They are physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. Too little attention to any one of them will create the feeling of being out of sync with your self. Here are some actions you can take in each of the dimensions that will strengthen your sense of balance:

In the Mental Dimension
Look for ways to eliminate time-bandits. Set up efficient systems. Use technology. Unclutter your work and home environments. Have easy access to essential information. Learn how to say "no." Set reasonable time-lines for project completion and delivery of services and products. Refrain from over-promising. Hire staff who emphatically support the vision and mission of the company. Expect them to carry on with business in the spirit you intend even when you're not around.

In the Physical Dimension
Take time for well-balanced meals. Sit down and eat in a calm and quiet environment -- not in your car or at your desk. Take frequent breaks. If you sit a lot, stand up and move around about every 15 minutes. If you're on your feet, wear comfortable shoes, stretch your back and legs, and sit down periodically. Invest in ergonomically correct workspaces. Include movement in your daily routine.

In the Social Dimension
Nurture your relationships. Openly communicate and consciously cooperate with all of the people in your life -- your employees, customers, friends, and family members. Make "appointments" with your family and friends and refrain from canceling because you just have too much work to do. Engage in hobbies that are unrelated to work. Do things for their pure enjoyment that will take your mind off the rigors of running a business. Hobbies are also great outlets for pent-up feelings.

In the Emotional Dimension
Take time out for your self. Find a time, perhaps at the beginning of the day, to nurture your self daily. Meditate, commune with nature, or read inspirational material. When you take this time just for you, you'll find you're more productive and effective in your business dealings.

In the Spiritual Dimension
Schedule vacations and long weekends. Take at least one day off each week. Set aside time to reflect. Think about your personal and business goals. Are you on the most appropriate path for you? Is your daily activity aligned with what you truly want to accomplish?

By taking gentle control of your activity, you can achieve the balance you desire. By living InSyncŪ with your self and others, you can create a life that's peaceful, satisfying, and purposeful.
