Times Are Changing And So Must You

Susan Pilgrim Ph.D. Managed care, HMOs, and PPOs have changed the face of today's medical practice. You now must deal with economic and governmental variables, technological advances, and a more demanding patient population -- all of which are forcing the medical profession to change the way it does business. You're compelled to venture into unknown territory, often longing for the time when life and practicing medicine was simpler. You may find that you're torn between the excitement that comes with the new and the frustration that's caused by the unknown, the mistakes, and the feeling that much is out of your control. Consider these suggestions for making change work for your benefit.

View Change as a Challenge. Search for ways you can create a benefit. Seek opportunities that will lead to thriving in today's healthcare and economic environment. Know you can handle any dilemma that comes your way.

Let Go of the "Good Old Ways." Expect that you'll resist the changes -- wanting to revert to doing what's familiar. Since change affects you emotionally you must release your attachments to the known. Use your inner strength to move on.

Make Conscious Choices. Consider the impact the changes will have on you. Make decisions in such a way that you'll receive benefit. Engage in deliberate behavior as you accept responsibility for how you deal with change.

Change is inevitable, unpredictable, and compelling. It's an opportunity to grow personally as well as professionally. Consciously choose how you want to embrace change. Foster an attitude of flexibility so you can take advantage of the opportunities that come your way.
